Glenda Viljoen is from Benoni, a city just outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the eldest daughter and the first grandchild in her family, married to Gary and has two sons. She is one of the leading doyens of the paper craft industry in South Africa and is an example of quality and local talent.
In 2010, she attended Ranger University in New Jersey, USA and is now a certified Ranger Instructor. This has enabled her to educate and inspire others in the use of inks, stains, paints and embossing products and techniques. She completed various design courses at reputable organizations, designing adverts and artwork for various magazines and publications in the industry in South Africa.
She designs layouts and teaches classes at major events and personalized classes as well as retailer education classes for the largest local scrapbook distributor in South Africa, TroCraft. Advertorials of the various layouts are placed in local craft and scrapbooking magazines.
She was part of the following International Design Teams: Prima Education, Hazel & Ruby Makery, Create Magazine and three years on the Fancy Pants Designs Project Design Team before launching her own brand, Penelope Dee in partnership with TroCraft in June 2016. Penelope Dee product is designed by Glenda Viljoen. The paper has been carefully designed to enable the beginner or expert scrapbooker to produce layouts using only a few sheets of paper. The superior quality paper makes it suitable for card making and mixed media projects too.
Her primary goal is to take scrapbooking on a never-ending journey beyond mundane, repetitious themes and content to an ever upward attainment of new and exciting layouts and new ideas. She has a unique creative style both in her layouts and her teaching methods which makes attendance to both her classes and conventions an enjoyable, life changing experience. This is evident in the growing number of delegates who attend her classes and events year after year.
In closing, she has never lost sight of the purpose of scrapbooking, which is her gift to family and friends that will enable her to leave a legacy of memories and a documented life story.
HOST / Instructor - Melissa Kennedy
As my business name states, we are all unique and unmistakable creations. Made up of everyday life experiences, growing and changing with each new day.
I've been fortunate to have been a part of this Industry for now well over 25 years and as mentioned in my very first blog post on this website, now starting to see how everything learnt along the way is coming together. I have been extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with some big companies within this industry, learn (and still learning many design skills, as well as being an educator in an industry, that has taken me around the world a number of times. “Are you for real – you seriously cut and paste for a living and travel the world” (imagine the English accent spoken here) as one guy said to me on an trip overseas… never really looked at it that way until then and thought – yeah actually I really do… Now its great to be able to give this same opportunity to other educators in the industry as they join me on some of these cruises.
Along with my love of photography and travel, I am one of the fortunate ones who has been able to turn my hobby into not only a job, but a business. I still laugh when my beautiful girls inform me i don't have a real job.
Love (did i say love) getting my hands dirty, I LOVE PAPER, love exploring new techniques and would say my style evolves depending on the type of projects we are doing. I'm not afraid to try something new and that is something I try to get across to those in my classes - there are no mistakes - only UNMISTAKABLE and unique creations .... oh did I mention I love to LAUGH and to have FUN!!!
But moreso than anything else on these cruises - I love watching people do something for the first time. Whether that be a new technique in class or something they have wanted to tick off their bucket list and thought they wouldn't never do. The belief in themselves that grows with that achievement, the excitement on their faces (yes you can see it) is something that makes the crazy hectic busy times all worthwhile.
Look forward to seeing you on board.
You will need to bring along a normal basic scrapbooking tool kit. Similar to what you would bring to any retreat.
Items to definitely include:
- craft matt – needs only to be a small A4 mat but something to use with your craft knife.
- craft knife
- small scissors (blades to be no longer than 4″)
- edge distressor
- adhesives….lots of them (include tape runners/adhesive tape and glues for embellishments)
Optional Extra’s (not necessary but certainly helps if you have them
- mini mister
- baby wipes (to clean up your area and hands) – no taps in the conference room to wash hands.
You will be given kits for each class so its not necessary to bring along other scrapbooking products unless you have something specific in mind you want to work on whilst away.
Closer to the sailing date I will give you photograph requirements which you can either bring from home or cut up white card stock to relevant sizes so you can use on layouts and replace with a real photo when you have a suitable one.
More details on the requirements for each class will be given closer to the cruise date.
